Reflecting on our own financial education as kids

Kids and money, what are we teaching them?
We founded Kid Funded to focus on financial education for kids. In short, create programs to teach kids about money. Growing up, we didn’t know much about money. We knew it got us things. We knew we were supposed to work hard for it. But that’s pretty much it. What is managing money? How do we make it work for us? That’s something we learned along the way (and continue to learn) on our own. We hope Kid Funded can be a way for kids to start learning about money and in turn, help others, maybe even their parents!
As a kid, one of us fell in love with playing volleyball and after making the school team, asked to try out for club and was told it wasn’t in the budget. That was it for her. Full stop. And she accepted it. It wasn’t until she was in her 40’s and raising kids of her own that she realized her teenage self could have DONE SOMETHING to address at least the budget portion:
- She had a piggy bank where she saved up a few hundred dollars, if not a couple thousand dollars–enough to pay for at least 1 year of club in those days
- She started working part-time jobs in high school – got her start as holiday help at the local mall.
But…it NEVER even occurred to her that she could have at least attempted to pay for club volleyball herself. She could have played club volleyball after all!
So, to kick off Kid Funded we have a couple of programs in mind to help kids think about and plan how they can fund their own wishlists. Be it the latest PlayStation, the hottest sneakers or their newly founded passion of volleyball or <<insert sport/hobby here>>. How can we empower our students and young kids to turn “no” and “can’t” into “how can i”? Follow us on our journey to helping kids self-fund their wishlists through teaching kids the basics of business and money.
